Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period inspite of extensive use of antimicrobial therapy . Sepsis related mortality and mortality rates are high among preterm infants especially in the smallest neonates . The increased risk of severe neonatal infections in the extremely preterm infant is thought to be attributable to immature defense mechanisms in combination with the use of invasive treatment techniques
