Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of General Surgery Summary: In cases of colonic and rectal cancer, complete surgical removal of the involved bowel segment is the most effective primary treatment. However, local recurrence or distant metastases occur even after complete resection. The main prognostic factors for colorectal cancer are penetration of the tumor into different layers of the bowel wall and regional lymph node involvement, which also form the basis of dukes and TNM classifications in staging of colorectal cancer. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of positive peritoneal lavage cytology in correlation with the tumor stage in colorectal cancer patients and to correlate between the incidence of positive peritoneal lavage cytology and the tumor stage in patients with colorectal cancer
