Background: Oxidative stress has been proposed as one of the causes of intrauterine growth restriction. However the exact relationship between oxidative stress and IUGR is not understood. Aims: To understand the role of oxidative stress and antioxidant status in IUGR neonates and matched controls. Objectives: (i) To compare levels of antioxidants [paraoxonase 1 activity (PON 1) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)] as well as malondialdehyde level (MDA) (a marker of lipid peroxidation) between full term IUGR and AGA neonates (ii) To study the relationship between symmetrical IUGR singleton full term neonates and oxidant and antioxidant status. Methods: The study was conducted on 44 full term IUGR neonates and 45 AGA neonates as a control group. Clinical examination and delivery data were recorded. MDA was estimated by a thiobarbituric acid-reactive technique; TAC was determined colorimetrically and PON1 activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Results:Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was significantly increased in IUGR than controls (P <0.001). Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) enzymatic activity were significant decreased in IUGR than control groups with P < 0.001, P equal 0.048 respectively
