Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Operative Dentistry Summary: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of arginine toothpaste versus fluoride containing toothpaste on neutralization of microbial acid produced by Cariogenic bacteria in adult population using chair side assessment method. Two toothpastes were used in this study were arginine containing toothpaste (Colgate Maximum Cavity Protection Plus Sugar Acid Neutralizer) versus fluoride containing toothpaste (Colgate max fresh). A total number of 14 volunteer participants assigned in this study. Caries risk assessment using Cariogram model was made to each participant, creating a risk profile for each participant. Participants were selected with the intention of high caries risk. It is a linear cross over trial all participants were exposed to two types of toothpaste D in two phases; where groups D1 participants used arginine containing toothpaste while groups D2 the participants used the fluoride containing toothpaste. The salivary pH was assessed according to time in relation to the brushing with toothpaste (T) where (T0) represent salivary pH before brushing with toothpastes, (T1) represent salivary pH after brushing with toothpastes. All subjects were exposed to both type of toothpastes in two phases, and a two days interval was maintained between the applications of toothpaste as a wash out period. Salivary pH value was measured before each application of toothpaste and termed 2resting pH3 using a digital pH meter
