ركز الدراسة على وصف وتحليل الموقع الجغرافي لسهل البطانة، ووصف وتحليل بيئته ومناخه لتحديد أثرهما على الاستيطان فيه. وقد تمتع ببيئة متنوعة سمحت بانتشار الاستيطان فيه، وتنوع الاستيطان في البطانة بين مناطق الاستيطان الدائم، في مروي، ومويس، ووادي بنغا. أما المستوطنات على أطراف السهل، فكانت مناطق ناشوك، التي خدمت التجارة، لذا كان للبيئة تأثير كبير على تشكل تلك المستوطنات في سهل البطانة. يُعد سهل البطانة من أهم مناطق السودان، حيث يزخر بالعديد من المواقع الأثرية التي تعود إلى فترات تاريخية مختلفة، من العصر الحجري القديم وحتى عصر المملكة المروية. كان للموقع الجغرافي لسهل البطانة تأثيرٌ كبيرٌ على ازدهار مملكة مروي، التي امتدت في أوجها على مدار ما يقرب من 1000 عام ميلادي. على بُعد كيلومتراتٍ على طول وادي النيل الشرقي، من قلب الأراضي السودانية بين عطبرة وملتقى النيلين الأزرق والأبيض، إلى النوبة السفلى والحدود مع مصر، سافرتُ عشرات الكيلومترات في السافانا المطرية غرب البطانة. لم يكن التأثير المتبادل بين البيئة في مروي وسكانها ماديًا فحسب، بل تأثر السكان بالبيئة المحيطة بهم، وظهر ذلك جليًا في ثقافتهم ودينهم، وتجلى ذلك جليًا في تبجيلهم للمعبود أبيدماك، الذي بنوا له المعابد. كان يُصوَّر برأس أسد. تتميز مروي بالعديد من الخصائص التي أهلتها لتكون العاصمة الجديدة لمملكة النوبة. ومن أهمها الموقع الجغرافي المتميز على مفترق طرق القوافل التي تربط مصر بأثيوبيا وجميع دول أفريقيا، بالإضافة إلى طبيعة المنطقة الغنية بالموارد الطبيعية من أراضٍ شاسعة وأمطار وفيرة. The study focuses on describing and analyzing the geographical location of the Butana Plain and describing and analyzing its environment and climate to determine their impact on settlement there. It enjoyed a diverse environment that allowed the spread of settlement there, and the diversity of settlement in Butana between areas of permanent settlement, in Meroe, Muwais, and Wadi Bangaa. period until the era of the Meroitic Kingdom. the geographical location of the Butana Plain had a great impact on the prosperity of the Meroitic Kingdom, which extended in its heyday over nearly 1000 AD. Km along the eastern Nile Valley, from the heart of Sudanese territory between Atbara and the confluence of the Blue and White Nile to
Lower Nubia and the border with Egypt, I traveled dozens of kilometers in the rain-fed savannah in the west of Butana. The mutual influence between the environment in Meroe and the habitants was not only material, but the habitants were influenced by the environment around them and this appeared in their culture and religion greatly, and this was clearly evident in their reverence for the idol Abidemak, to whom they built temples. He was depicted with a lion’s head. Meroe is characterized by many characteristics that qualified it to be the new
capital of the Nubian Kingdom. The most important of which is the distinguished geographical location at the crossroads of caravan routes linking Egypt to Ethiopia and all the countries of Africa, in addition to the nature of the region, which is rich in natural resources of vast lands and abundant rains.
