Effect of core stability exercises on symmetrical weight bearing in chronic stroke patients / تأثير تمارين الاستقرار الأساسي على تحميل الوزن المتماثل في مرضي السكتة الدماغية المزمنة by Mohamed Arafa Abd El-Halim El-Sheikh ; Supervisors Prof. Dr. Mohamed Nabil El-Bahrawy, Dr. Heba Assem Deraz, Dr. Hossam Mohamed Mohamed Alsaid. - 100 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm. + CD.
Thesis (M.Sc)-Cairo University, 2024.
Bibliography: pages 79-93.
Background: A stroke is the most frequent clinical manifestation of diseases which causes motor, sensory, perceptual, or cognitive deficiency and have serious impact on independence, functioning and quality of life of the stroke survivors.
Objective: To find out the effectiveness of core muscle strengthening exercise on symmetrical weight bearing in chronic stroke patients.
Subject and Methods: Forty chronic stroke patients of both genders were recruited with participation ranging from 50 to 65 years of age in this study. The diagnosis was confirmed by a neurologist. The chosen patients were split into a pair of equal groups at random, The control group (B) and the study group (A). The subjects were assessed by weight scale by standing on one weight scale with both legs to measure the accurate body weight of the patient then put one leg on each weight scale then capture the weight of the affected and non-affected legs. Each patient was assessed by Balance Berg scales pretreatment. and repeated measurements were taken after treatment. The treatment was done for six weeks, day after day. The study group (A) received core stability exercises plus selected program for physical therapy (gentle strengthening exercises for upper limb and lower `limb, mobilization for scapula & pelvis, strengthening for antigravity muscles, range of motion exercises and balance exercises). The control group (B) received only the same selected physical therapy program.
Results: the comparison between pre-treatment and post-treatment within study group (A) for affected weight limb and non-affected weight limb (p=0.0001 & p=0.0001) showed significant difference and group (B) showed significant difference between pre-post treatment p=0.0001 & p= 0.0001. The result from comparing the two groups post treatment showed no significant difference (p=0.622 & p=0.183) for affected and non-affected weight limb.
For berg balance scale, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) between both groups at pre-treatment (P=0.325), but there was a significant (P<0.05) increase in Berg balance scale (P=0.0001) at post-treatment compared to pre-treatment.
Conclusion: Core stability exercises significantly affected symmetrical weight bearing in chronic stroke patients. But there was no significant difference between the core stability exercises and the selected physiotherapy exercises on symmetrical weight bearing among chronic stroke patients.
