تعلق الدول النامية آمالاً عريضة على الإستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة التي تضطلع بها هذه الشركات لتحقيق معدلات مرتفعة من النمو الإقتصادي بها، عن طريق زيادة وتنوع صادراتها وخلق فرص عمل جديدة وخلق جو من المنافسة بين الشركات عبر الوطنية وفروعها من جانب والشركات المحلية من جانب آخر. وتسيطر على هذه الشركات جنسيات كثيرة، ويتولى إداراتها أشخاص من جنسيات متعددة، كما أنها تمارس أنشطتها في بلاد متعددة، وبالرغم من أن إستراتيجية تلك الشركات تكون قراراتها في مركزها الرئيسي، فإن نشاطها يتجاوز الحدود الوطنية والإقليمية لهذه الدول، التي يوجد بها ذلك المركز الرئيسي، والذي يسمى بالدولة الأم، وتنتشر نشاطها في دول كثيرة أخرى تسمى بالدول المضيفة، ويتضح أن هذه الشركات تعتمد في أنشطتها على سوق متعددة الدول، وأن قراراتها تتسم بالصبغة الدولية، حيث إنها تتمتع بحرية كبيرة في تحريك الموارد وعناصر الإنتاج ونقلها فضلاً عن المزايا التكنولوجية، والتي تتمتع بها، وتتمايز بها عن الدول التي تباشر فيها نشاطاتها، وهي تعد من الأسباب التي من أجلها قامت الدول بإستضافة هذا النوع من الكيانات الإقتصادية العملاقة، وهي تعد من الأسباب الرئيسية في ظهور العولمة. وتتعدد نشاطات تلك الشركات عبر الوطنية، ويرجع السبب الرئيسي في تنويع نشاط تلك الشركات، إلى تعويض الخسائر المحتملة في نشاط معين بأرباح قد تتحقق من أنشطة أخرى، وهذه النوعية من الشركات يكون رأسمالها كبير الحجم لدرجة أن حجم رأسمالها قد يكون أكبر من الناتج القومي لعدد من الدول مجتمعة. Developing countries put great hopes in the foreign direct investment undertaken by these companies to achieve high rates of economic growth by increasing and diversifying their exports, creating new job opportunities and creating an atmosphere of competition between transnational companies and their subsidiaries on the one hand and local companies on the other.These companies are controlled by many nationalities, they are managed by people of multiple nationalities, and they also practice their activities in multiple countries. Although the strategy of these companies is to make their decisions in their main center, their activity exceeds the national and regional borders of these countries, in which their main center is located, which is called the mother country, and their activity is spread in many other countries called the host countries. It is clear that these companies rely in their activities on a multi-country market, and that their decisions are international in nature, as they enjoy great freedom in the movement and transfer of resources and elements of production, as well as the technological advantages that they enjoy, and they are distinguished from the countries in which they carry out their activities, which is one of the reasons why countries host this type of giant economic entities, which is one of the main reasons for the emergence of globalization.
The activities of these transnational companies are diverse, and the main reason for diversifying the activities of these companies is to compensate for potential losses in a particular activity with profits that may be achieved from other activities. This type of company has a large capital to the extent that the size of its capital may be greater than the Gross National Product of a number of countries combined.
