This thesis is an analytical study of hughes' folk satirical comedies in which he adapted the African American folktales to criticize the African American society in harlem from the twenties to the sixties. The introduction focuses on hughes' distinctiveness in African American literature and harlem renaissance and the debate between him and the African American writers and critics for his depiction of the African American lower class
