Heart rate is a major determinant of oxygen consumption and metabolic demand . Higher heart rate many induce or exacerbate ischemia and symptoms of angina that is why rate - slowing drugs are considered to be the cornerstone of antianginal therapy . Reperfusion strategies are required to resuscitate the ischemic myocardium . However, reperfusion has the potential to exacerbate lethal tissue injury, a process termed reperfusion injury
