Background: HBV is a serious public health problem in many countries. More than 350 million people suffer from CHB, resulting in over 600,000 deaths each year mainly from cirrhosis or liver cancer. Mutations in the genome encoding the pre-core/core protein result in a loss of hepatitis B e antigen with persistence of HBV replication. HBV has been divided into various genotypes A - H (or putative I) and subtypes. Aim of work: to determine HBV genotype and sub types and HBeAg status and viral sequencing in HBV infected adult patients, analyze the relationship between the HBV genotype, subtype and HBeAg status and severity of liver affection. Patients and methods: 100 patients aged from 19-60 years diagnosed to have CHB were enrolled in the period "between December 2011 to June 2013" and they subjected to full clinical examination, assessment of degree of fibrosis by fibroscan and blood samples drawn for routine lab assessment, viral markers, PCR, genotype, subgenotype, sequence analysis
