Fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller is a natural extension of PID controller that used numerously in industrial applications. This thesis discusses the tuning and implementation of FOPID in industrial applications. A program has been developed to implement this controller in an industrial distributed control system (DCS). The optimization algorithms (like genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)) have been presented to tune the parameters of FOPID to obtain the desired response with application in simulation program (MATLAB). To check experimentally this controller, this developed program has been tested using standard industrial DCS unit and a laboratory unit for controlling the level. Several comparisons of results with the traditional PID controller show that FOPID controller has been successfully implemented in industrial DCS and show a relative improvement in the response of FOPID controller
