The injection of false appliance power consumption data within home area networks (HANs) is one of the most critical cyber security threats facing the introduction of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) into the smart grid. Energy theft can be achieved by using false data injection to reduce energy bills. This problem is more critical in wireless HANs, where the wireless media access control (MAC) layer could be compromised to facilitate false data injection. This thesis focuses on the detection of these false data injection attacks in 802.15.4 HANs, as the IEEE 802.15.4 standard is the dominant enabling technology for HANs
