Background: Combined oral contraceptive pill has been the short-acting hormonal contraceptive of choice for the last 50 years. However, for some women this may not be a suitable or optimal contraceptive choice due to the side effects. The development of better tolerated methods as monthly injectable contraception is of particular importance where no daily attention is preferred, thus improving compliance. Objectives: To assess and compare the side effects of oral combined contraceptive pills versus monthly combined contraceptive injections regarding their menstrual and non-menstrual side effects. Methodology: This is a prospective comparative study that was carried on a sample of 100 clients, attending two selected family medicine units (Gezera Elmasada and Mydoum) in Beni Suef Governorate and seeking for a contraceptive method. The participants were chosen by purposive sampling technique according to inclusion criteria. Clients were divided into two groups (A and B groups). Group A: received combined oral contraceptive pills. Progestogen-estrogen combination for oral contraception (Microcept tablets) Group B: received monthly combined injectable contraceptives. Each 1 ml Mesocept ampule contains 50 mg norethisterone enanthate and 5 mg estradiol valerate in oily solution. Clients were followed for 6 months and were interviewed monthly to assess the side effects
