| Summary, etc. | Biodegradation of malathion was studied in liquid culture media seeded with an entomopathogenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolateBt - MOS - 5 was isolated from agricultural wastewater near Berket El - Sabaa area where organophosphorus insecticides are heavily usedTolerance of MOS - 5 to malathion and its ability to utilize it as sole carbon and energy source were investigatedViable cell counts in minimal medium supplied with malathion (250 ppm) either alone or in combination with glucose (5000 ppm) or yeast extract (500 ppm) were determinedThe results revealed that malathion supported growth of Bacillus thuringiensis (MOS - 5) as a sole sources of carbon , energy and phosphorusCometabolic degradation was also found with other growth substratesIn presence of glucose , slight increase in cfu / ml was observed whereas presence of yeast extract resulted in a marked enhancing effect on bacterial growthThe most prominent increase in bacterial growth was observed in media containing both glucose and yeast extract and supplied with malathion |
