Summary, etc. This retrospective study was conducted on CBCT scans of mandibular permanent first
and second molars of a sample of the Egyptian population to assess the variations in the number,
location, direction, & severity of curvatures of the root canal system in the bucco-lingual and
mesio-distal dimensions. Based on sample size calculation, a total of 373 root canals of
mandibular first and second permanent molars from 40 CBCT belonging to Egyptian individuals
were examined including a total of 106 molars, 50 mandibular first molars and 56 mandibular
second molars of 21 female patients and 19 male patients. The scans were viewed using
Planmeca Romexis® Viewer and were analyzed in the 3 main orthogonal planes (axial, coronal
and sagittal). Root canal curvatures were assessed in 2 planes: the curvatures in the mesio-distal
dimension from the sagittal section and the curvatures in the bucco-lingual dimension from the
coronal sections.
The data recorded and analyzed from the scans were the number of curvatures per root
canal in each of the coronal and sagittal cuts, the direction of curvatures (mesial or distal) in
sagittal cuts, (buccal or lingual) in coronal cuts, the location of curvatures per root canal
(cervical, middle, apical) in each of sagittal and coronal cuts, the degree of severity of curvatures
using Schneider’s method if one curvature was present per root canal, and Cunningham and
Senia’s method for root canals with more than one curvature, the association between gender
and root curvature severity and presence of multiple curves per root canal was assessed as well
and most prevalent location of single root canal curves.
166
The results of our study showed that:
• Multiple curvatures are proved to be prevalent in the root canals of mandibular
1
st and 2nd molars.
• Apical root canal third predominantly show curvatures among mandibular 1st
and 2nd molars.
• The majority of curves were moderately to severely angulated.
• The curvatures showed a wide diversity in direction among different root
canals of mandibular 1st and 2nd molars.
• There is no significant difference between male and female regarding the
prevalence of severe curvatures in most of the root canals.
• There is no association between gender and presence of multiple curvatures along
the canal path in most of the root canals.
• Single curvature in the root canal can be located in any part of the canal with no
preference for cervical, middle or apical thirds.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.

وكشفت نتائج الدراسة الحالية أ ن;
