| Summary, etc. | Background: Thalassemia is a genetic haemoglobinopathy due to a defect in globin chain production. Morbidity from thalassemia can arise from the deleterious effects of ineffective erythropoiesis or the complications associated with multiple transfusions. Purpose: This cross–sectional study was conducted to detect the degree of deviation of pulmonary functions and physical fitness of children with β–thalassemia from healthy children and also to examine the correlation between them in thalassemic children. Methods: Thirty–four children with β–thalassemia children of both genders with age ranged from 6 to 10 years, participated in this study, they were selected from Abo El–Reesh hospital for children. In addition to thirty–one age matched volunteer healthy children, they were selected from governmental schools. Pulmonary functions including vital capacity, maximal voluntary ventilation, tidal volume, forced expiration in one second and peak expiratory flow rate were assessed by spire-spectrum neuro–soft spirometer. Health related physical fitness and balance were assessed by using six–minute walk test and pediatric balance scale respectively and energy expenditure was also detected by energy expenditure index. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between children with β–thalassemia and healthy children regarding pulmonary functions and physical fitness (p < 0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation between pulmonary functions and functional capacity and balance was recorded. But there was a statistically significant negative correlation with energy expenditure and pulmonary functions (p < 0.05). Moreover, some pulmonary functions (FEV1/VC, FEV1/FVC, MVV) had non-significant correlation with functional capacity, balance and energy expenditure (p > 0.05). Conclusion: β– thalassemia has a negative impact on the pulmonary functions and physical fitness of those children. |

| Summary, etc. | الخلفية: الثلاسيميا هو اعتلال الهيموجلوبين الوراثي نتيجة وجود خلل في إنتاج سلسلة الجلوبين. يمكن أن تنشأ الإصابة بالثلاسيميا من الآثار الضارة لعدم فعالية تكون الكريات الحمر أو المضاعفات المرتبطة بعمليات نقل الدم المتعددة. <br/>الهدف: أجريت هذه الدراسة المقطعية للكشف عن درجة انحراف وظائف الرئة واللياقة البدنية للأطفال المصابين بمرض الثلاسيميا بيتا عن الأطفال الأصحاء وكذلك لفحص العلاقة الارتباطية بينهما لدى الأطفال المصابين بالثلاسيميا. طرق البحث: شارك في هذه الدراسة أربعة وثلاثون طفلاً مصاباً بمرض بيتا الثلاسيميا من كلا الجنسين وتراوحت أعمارهم بين 6 إلى 10 سنوات، تم اختيارهم من مستشفى أبو الريش للأطفال. بالإضافة إلى واحد وثلاثين من الأطفال الأصحاء المتطوعين المتطابقين في العمر، تم اختيارهم من المدارس الحكومية. تم تقييم وظائف الرئة بما في ذلك القدرة الحيوية، والحد الأقصى للتهوية الطوعية، وحجم المدي ، والزفير القسري في ثانية واحدة ومعدل تدفق الزفير الأقصى بواسطة مقياس التنفس . تم تقييم اللياقة البدنية والتوازن المتعلقين بالصحة باستخدام اختبار المشي لمدة ست دقائق ومقياس توازن الأطفال على التوالي، كما تم الكشف عن إستهلاك الطاقة من خلال مؤشر إستهلاك الطاقة. النتائج: كان هناك فرق ذو دلالة إحصائية بين الأطفال المصابين بالثلاسيميا بيتا والأطفال الأصحاء فيما يتعلق بوظائف الرئة واللياقة البدنية (p<0.05). وتم تسجيل وجود علاقة إيجابية ذات دلالة إحصائية بين وظائف الرئة والقدرة الوظيفية والتوازن وعلاقة عكسية مع إستهلاك الطاقة باستثناء التهوية الطوعية القصوى. علاوة علي ذلك فان بعض الوظائف الرئوية مثل التهوية الطوعية القصوى و حجم الزفير القسري في الثانية الاولي \السعة الحيوية القسرية لم تكن ذو دلالة احصائية مع القدرة الوظيفية ، التوازن واستهلاك الطاقة( (p> 0.05. الاستنتاج: مرض البيتا- الثلاسيميا له تأثير سلبي على وظائف الرئة واللياقة البدنية لهؤلاء الأطفال. |
