Summary, etc. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common and painful dental issue <br/>characterized by brief, sharp pain when exposed dentin reacts to various stimuli. <br/>Bioactive glass and different types of lasers have been tested in treating DH. Yet, none <br/>have incorporated them together in occluding exposed dentinal tubules. <br/>Aim of the study: The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of erbium, <br/>chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser (λ = 2780 nm) and <br/>bioactive glass nanoparticles (NanoBG) paste either alone or in combination with <br/>different sequences on dentinal tubules closure. <br/>Materials and methods: Forty extracted human sound premolars teeth were used for <br/>this study. They were distributed equally into 5 groups (n=10). Control group: <br/>received no treatment. NanoBG Group: treated with nanoBG paste only; <br/>Er,Cr:YSGG laser Group: treated with laser irradiation alone, Er,Cr:YSGG laser + <br/>NanoBG group: treated with nanoBG paste after laser irradiation. NanoBG+ <br/>Er,Cr:YSGG laser group: treated with nanoBG paste before laser irradiation. Dentin <br/>specimens were assessed morphologically by scanning electron microscope (SEM), <br/>with subsequent analysis of the mean diameter of dentinal tubules, and calcium and <br/>phosphorous analysis by Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. <br/>Results: NanoBG+ Er,Cr:YSGG laser group showed significantly improved dentinal <br/>tubules closure compared to the other groups through SEM imaging. The results were <br/>confirmed by the EDX analysis which revealed the highest calcium and phosphorus <br/>weight %, in addition to recording the lowest mean diameter of dentinal tubules with <br/>statistically significant difference between groups (p<0.05). <br/><br/><br/>v <br/><br/> <br/><br/>Conclusion: The application of nanoBG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and the combination <br/>of both provided satisfactory occlusion of the dentinal tubules. Yet, the combination of <br/>nano-BG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser was found more efficient with superior results, rather <br/>than using each modality alone.
