| Summary, etc. | Background: While blood culture is the gold standard for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, results may need a few days to show up, hence the need for finding new inflammatory markers that might help easier follow-up. One of these biomarkers is the C-reactive protein (CRP), it is more convenient Salivary CRP is an emerging biomarker that could overcome the limitation of frequent blood sampling in neonates.<br/>Objectives: Assessment of the validity of salivary CRP level as a reliable biomarker for follow-up and prognosis of neonatal sepsis and correlating levels of salivary CRP to the serum CRP levels. <br/>Patients and methods: This prospective cohort study included 44 neonates with confirmed neonatal sepsis” based on positive blood culture “, recruited from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Cairo University from January 2022 to December 2022. Thorough history taking, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations including complete blood count, serum, and salivary CRP on the 1st and 3rd days samples were done to them. Salivary CRP was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).<br/>Results: The gestational age of neonates ranged from 32 to 38 weeks with a mean ± SD of 35 ± 1.7 weeks and a predominance of female gender (77.3%). The mean salivary CRP on the first sample was 1.479 ± 1.377, and 1.358 ± 1.351 on the 3rd day later, the difference was not statistically different (p value= 0.838). There was no statistically significant correlation neither between 1st and 2nd samples of both serum and salivary CRP or even the other variables including the mortality.<br/>Conclusion: Salivary CRP was not a reliable predictor for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis and salivary CRP was not correlated with either 1st or 2nd serum CRP. |
