Summary, etc. | The present study attempted to find an effective treatment for the problem of incoherent essays that are produced by EFL learners. This was done through the product approach as the study investigated the impact of two methods of giving feedback to students’ essays: negotiated feedback (NF) versus written monologue feedback (WMF) on the problem of relational coherence. The participants of the study were Intermediate undergraduate students at one of the private universities in Egypt. The research design is quasi-experimental as it involved collecting quantitative and discourse structure data. The quantitative data were in the form of the scores of the students’ essays in the criterion of coherence in their Pre-Observation and Post-Observations. The discourse structure data was obtained from analyzing the written discourse structure of students’ essays and examining the extent of the correlation between the quality of the participants’ discourse structure before and after each treatment. To enable the teachers of the experiment to give negotiated feedback, a twofold tasks were prepared. Firstly, a feedback model based on guided questions was developed and edtech tools were selected to facilitate negotiating feedback and providing written feedback. The findings of the experiment revealed a significant improvement for the two experimental groups, and that the participants of the NF group significantly outperformed their counterparts in the WMF group in coherence scores and the quality of participants’ discourse structure. |
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
