520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The question posed by this thesis is what motivates an autocratic government to deploy
manipulation measures in elections regardless of their high cost. The thesis tests the robustness of
the results using two distinct outcome variables as proxies for manipulation measures: the
incidence of unfair elections and the government's use of intimidation techniques against
opposition. According to the thesis, the likelihood that the regime will employ manipulation
techniques increases with the severity of the potential ramifications of losing power for it, its ability
to rally support from within, and its perception of the opposition as a legitimate threat in a free and
fair election. Additionally, it expects that the anticipated backlash from using such measures should
have a negative effect on the regime’s willingness to use such measures. The findings reveal that
many of these thesis predictors have a significant impact on the regime's willingness to deploy
election manipulation techniques. Finally, the thesis develops four hypothetical scenarios in which
there are varying levels of the potential consequences of losing power and the expected reaction
from adopting these measures to further examine the results. The thesis's findings are based on a
statistical examination of 1,187 autocratic elections held in 126 nations during a 48-year period
starting from 1974 to 2022.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
