| Summary, etc. | Background: COVID-19 has led to significant morbidity and mortality, with severe cases often causing systemic coagulation disturbances, increasing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Objective: To determine the incidence of VTE in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods: Hospitalized adult COVID-19 patients were included. Data on demographics, comorbidities, VTE risk factors, COVID-19 severity and outcomes were collected. Laboratory investigations (CBC, liver and kidney functions and inflammatory markers) were done. Imaging studies, including duplex lower limb scans and pulmonary angiography were performed. Results: Of the 246 patients, 21 (8.5%) developed VTE. VTE was more common in males (76.2%) and older patients (mean age 62.9 vs. 56.77 years). Significant risk factors included prior VTE (14.3% vs. 0.4%) and smoking (33.3% vs. 23.1%). All VTE patients had abnormal D-dimer levels (100% vs. 51.6%). ICU admission was more frequent in VTE cases (81.0% vs. 8.9%), with longer hospital stay (16.00 vs. 9.81 days) and higher mortality in the VTE group (76.2% vs. 1.3%). Conclusion: VTE incidence in hospitalized COVID-19 patients was 8.5%, with critically ill patients at the highest risk. Enhanced screening and management are needed for high-risk groups. |
