520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In recent decades, researchers have become interested in alternative cancer
treatments. Plants are naturally loaded with a variety of phytochemicals. These
chemicals, which belong to various chemical classes, contain a number of secondary
metabolites. In this work, ethanol 80% was used to extract the different parts of five
wild plants from Egypt: moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera), vinca leaves (Vinca rose),
fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare), chicory leaves (Cichorium intybus), and cresson
seeds (Lepidium sativum). The plant extracts were examined for biological activity.
Strong antioxidant and anticancer properties were demonstrated by the extracts. DPPH
and reducing power assays were used to evaluate the antioxidants. The ethanol extracts
revealed potential antioxidants with corresponding IC values of 55.35, 185.05, 87.66,

50
7.89 and 167.57µg/mL. The current findings demonstrated that vinca extract had strong
anticancer properties against colorectal (Caco-2) cell line, with an IC of 11.7 µg/mL,

50
while moringa, fennel, cresson, and chicory had weaker anticancer effects, with IC of

50
25.32, 11.9, 26.7, and 52.86 µg/mL, respectively. the contents of total phenols (TPC)
and flavonoids (TFC) were assessed and fractionated, and the analysis revealed that
TPC and TFC were virtually the same in five ethanol plant extracts. TPC and TFC were
represented as mg gallic acid equivalent/gm sample (D.W) and mg quercitin
equivalent/gm sample (D.W), respectively. The biological activity indicated above may
be caused by these substances. For this reason, the gene expression of important pro-
and anti-apoptosis indicators were examined in Caco2 cells exposed to IC , which was

50
used to assess the induction of apoptosis in Moringa oleifera and Vinca rosa. the gene
expression of various signal transduction key markers controlling apoptosis process was
tested, such as p53, Bax, caspase-3 and Bcl-2 key markers. The RTqPCR-results showed
that Moringa have potential apoptosis induction compared to vinca and respective
control. The data obtained in the present study suggests that extracts would be useful as
pharmaceutical material to treat cancer separately or with combine other chemical to
enhance the anticancer effects, our results also suggest that inclusion of antioxidant and
anticancer-rich extract of V. rosea, M. oleifera or L. sativum as dietary supplementaries
have beneficial effects for human health
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
