520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This study aimed to investigate the effect of non-environmental factors(Age, parity, and body weight) and the impact of synergetic effect of ambient lead (Pb) exposure and Temperature-Humidity index (THI) on incidence of abortion in Egyptian Zaraibi goats (C. hircus). To achieve this, 80 female goats (does) were mated with highly fertile male goats (bucks), at two periods according to the breeding time in Zaraibi goats. The first and second breeding season occurred in May and September 2018. The levels of PAG1, P4, and Pb in serum were estimated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), radioimmunoassay (RIA), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) respectively while concentrations of hemoglobin content (Hb) in the blood and serum total proteins (STP) were measured using spectrophotometer. Statistically, cross-tabulation with a Chi-square test was applied to estimate the association (dependence or independence) of the ages, body weights, and parity variables of Zaraibi goats with the frequency(ies) of their birth cases (abortion or non-abortion) throughout the year and repeated measure two-way ANOVA, regression analysis, correlation coefficient, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied. Our present preliminary analysis showed an average Pb level of 5.0 mg/L of drinking water and 3.95 mg/kg of food which exceeded the allowable levels by UNESCO. The results showed that there was a significant direct relation between the parity of pregnant does and occurrence of abortion. The current data demonstrated that the levels of blood Pb in aborted goats were significantly higher than those in non-aborted goats throughout the gestation period and this
was followed by significant decreases in levels of PAG1, P4, Fe, and STP. The threshold level of Pb required to cause abortion was ≥32.08 – 32.59 μg/dl, for PAG1 levels was ≤0.88 – 0.95 ng/ml, and P4 was ≤ 0.48- 0.69 ng/ml. Additionally, threshold levels of ≥11.08 - 12.34 ng/ml and ≥ 29.56 – 31.52 ng/ml for P4 and PAG1, respectively, were needed to deliver twins. In conclusion, elevated Temperature–Humidity Index (THI) and pollution induced increases in Pb bioavailability resulted in dramatic decreases in P4
and PAG1 levels, leading to abortions. PAG1 and P4 levels are also key factors in determining whether Zaraibi goats will give birth to twins.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
