| Summary, etc. | اتّجهت الأدبيات حديثًا إلى دراسة المقاومة بأشكالها المختلفة ضد التراجع الديمقراطي الذي يشهده العالم أجمع عقب الموجة الثالثة من التحول الديمقراطي، ولكن تلك الأدبيات لم تتطرق إلى دور المؤسسات الدينية تجاه التحولات نحو السلطوية والتراجع الديمقراطي الراهن. لذلك أبحث في هذه الدراسة عن موقف المؤسسات الدينية، عبر الأقاليم المختلفة، تجاه الممارسات السلطوية التي أعقبت الموجة الثالثة من التحول الديمقراطي، وأدرس أسباب اختلاف مواقفهم تجاه تلك الظاهرة من منظور الاقتصاد السياسي للدين. خلصت النتائج إلى أن المنافسة الدينية العالية وانخفاض درجة تفضيل الحكومة للدين الذي تمثله المؤسسة الدينية والدور التاريخي المؤيد للديمقراطية لتلك المؤسسة عوامل حاسمة لاتخاذ المؤسسات الدينية موقف معارض ومقاوم ضد الممارسات السلطوية التي تهدف إلى بقاء النظام لفترة أطول. |

| Summary, etc. | Recent literature has begun to examine various forms of resistance to the democratic backsliding observed worldwide following the third wave of democratization. However, this scholarship has not addressed the role of religious institutions in the current democratic backsliding. Therefore, in this study, I analyze the stances of religious institutions across different regions towards the autocratic practices that emerged after the third wave of democratization. I also investigate the reasons behind the differences in their responses to this phenomenon from the perspective of the political economy of religion. The findings suggest that high levels of religious competition, low government preference for the institution’s religion, and the historical pro-democratizing role of the institution are critical factors that influence religious institutions to adopt a resistant stance against autocratic practices aimed at prolonging the regime. |
