| Summary, etc. | Background: Dysphagia is one of the main symptoms associated with stroke. So far, there is no known pharmacological treatment for dysphagia, however, research studies have shown that swallowing exercises may help. Aim: Evaluate the effect of three combined swallowing maneuvers on selected outcomes among patients with stroke. Methods: Quasi-experimental pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group was applied to a purposive sample of 60 participants. The control group received the routine hospital care, while, the study group exposed to the swallowing maneuvers in addition to the routine hospital care. Outcomes were assessed using Gugging Swallowing Screen, Pain Numeric Rating Scale and Arabic version-Dysphagia Handicap Index. Results: Along two weeks, study findings revealed significant differences between both groups in mean scores of severity of dysphagia with risk of aspiration, severity of odynophagia and quality of life (-2.867, 1.767 and 28.167 respectively), moreover, there were significant differences between both groups in mean scores of physical, functional and emotional quality of life (8.967, 10.600 and 9.433 respectively). Also there were significant differences between both groups in mean scores of severity of dysphagia (mean = 1.767) at p less than 0.05. Hence, all hypotheses were supported. Conclusion: The three combined swallowing maneuvers had a positive effect on the selected outcomes among patients with stroke, hence, it was recommended to be integrated with routine hospital care for these patients. |

| Summary, etc. | المقدمة: عسر البلع هو أحد الأعراض الرئيسية المرتبطة بالسكتة الدماغية. لا يوجد علاج دوائى معروف لعسر البلع، ومع ذلك، أظهرت الدراسات أن تمارين البلع قد تساعد فى علاج هذه المشكلة. الهدف: تقييم تأثير ثلاث طرق مجتمعة للبلع على نتائج مختارة بين مرضى السكتة الدماغية. تم تطبيق مجموعة الحكم شبه التجريبية قبل الاختبار على العينة التى تتكون من 60 مريض. تلقت المجموعة الضابطة الرعاية الروتينية في المستشفى ، بينما تعرضت مجموعة الدراسة لثلاث طرق للبلع بالإضافة إلى الرعاية الروتينية في المستشفى. تم تقييم النتائج باستخدام مقياس درجة البلع ، و مقياس التقييم الذاتى للآلم ، و مقياس الإعاقة الحركية للبلع. النتائج: كشفت نتائج الدراسة على مدار أسبوعين عن وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين المجموعتين في متوسط درجات شدة عسر البلع مع خطر الأصابة بالألتهاب الرئوى وشدة ألم البلع وجودة الحياة (-2.867 و 1.767 و 28.167 على التوالي)، علاوة على ذلك ، كانت هناك فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين كلتا المجموعتين في متوسط درجات جودة الحياة البدنية والوظيفية والنفسية (8.967 و 10.600 و 9.433 على التوالي). كما كانت هناك فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين المجموعتين في متوسط درجات شدة عسر البلع (المتوسط = 1.767) عند p أقل من 0.05. ومن ثم ، تم دعم جميع الفرضيات. الخلاصة: الثلاث طرق مجتمعة للبلع لها تأثير إيجابي على النتائج المختارة بين المرضى المصابين بالسكتة الدماغية ، وبالتالي ، تمت التوصية بدمجها مع الرعاية الروتينية في المستشفى لهؤلاء المرضى. |
