| Summary, etc. | This study investigates the relationship between exchange rate movements and employment within Egypt's public and private manufacturing sectors. The Egyptian economy, having undergone significant economic transformations and shifts in exchange rate regimes—from a managed floating regime in 2003, to a free-floating regime in 2016 and 2020—presents a unique context for examining this relationship. By utilizing panel data from 22 public and 17 private manufacturing sectors spanning from 2006Q3 to 2022Q3, this research aims to investigate how variations in exchange rates are related to employment changes across various manufacturing industries.<br/>The study examines this relationship through four key channels: macroeconomics, development, labor-intensity, and investment. Using the Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) estimation method, the findings indicate that, in the public manufacturing sector, exchange rate movements show no significant relationship with employment through the macroeconomic and development channels. However, the labor-intensity and investment channels present opposing relationships; labor intensity is positively associated with employment, while investment is negatively associated. In contrast, the private manufacturing sector exhibits some different patterns as the macroeconomic channel reveals a significant negative relationship between exchange rate movements and employment. Meanwhile, the development, labor-intensity, and investment channels align with the public sector findings. <br/>Employing the macroeconomic channel that employs the real exchange rate, a key variable, to explore this relationship within the 17 divisions constitute the private manufacturing sector, as it has no observable relationship with employment in the public sector. The relationship between exchange rate movements and employment varies significantly across different divisions of the private sector. Specifically, some divisions show no significant relationship, while others exhibit positive or negative effects. Among these, the manufacture of beverages is the most negatively division associated with exchange rate fluctuations, whereas the manufacture of textiles demonstrates the strongest positive relationship. |

| Summary, etc. | تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استقصاء العلاقة بين تحركات سعر الصرف والتوظيف في القطاعين العام والخاص ضمن قطاع التصنيع المصري. يمثل الاقتصاد المصري، الذي شهد تحولات اقتصادية كبيرة وتغيرات في أنظمة سعر الصرف، من نظام التعويم المدار في عام (2003) إلى نظام التعويم الحر في عامي (2016) و(2020)، سياقًا فريدًا لدراسة هذه العلاقة. وباستخدام بيانات قطاعية تتكون من (22) قطاعًا من قطاعات التصنيع العامة و(17) قطاعًا خاصًا خلال الفترة الممتدة من الربع الثالث لعام (2006) حتى الربع الثالث لعام (2022)، تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التحقيق في كيفية ارتباط التغيرات في أسعار الصرف بالتغيرات في معدلات التوظيف عبر مختلف الصناعات التحويلية في مصر.<br/>تفحص الدراسة هذه العلاقة من خلال أربع قنوات رئيسة: القناة الاقتصادية الكلية، قناة التنمية، قناة كثافة العمل، وقناة الاستثمار. باستخدام طريقة التقدير (Two-Stage Least Squares 2SLS)، أظهرت النتائج أن في القطاع العام للتصنيع، لا توجد علاقة ذات دلالة إحصائية بين تحركات سعر الصرف والتوظيف من خلال القناتين: الاقتصاد الكلي والتنمية. ومع ذلك، تُظهر قناتا كثافة العمل والاستثمار علاقاتٍ متناقضة؛ حيث ترتبط كثافة العمل إيجابيًا بالتوظيف، بينما يرتبط الاستثمار سلبيًا بالتوظيف. على النقيض من ذلك، يكشف القطاع الخاص للتصنيع أنماطاً مختلفة بعض الشيء، حيث تظهر القناة الاقتصادية الكلية علاقة سلبية ذات دلالة إحصائية بين تحركات سعر الصرف والتوظيف. وفي الوقت نفسه، تتماشى نتائج قنوات التنمية وكثافة العمل والاستثمار مع ما تم العثور عليه في القطاع العام.<br/>عند استخدام القناة الاقتصادية الكلية التي تعتمد على سعر الصرف الحقيقي كمتغير رئيس لاستكشاف العلاقة في القطاعات الـ (17) التي تشكل القطاع الخاص للتصنيع، تظهر النتائج أن العلاقة بين تحركات سعر الصرف والتوظيف تختلف بشكل كبير عبر مختلف قطاعات القطاع الخاص. على وجه الخصوص، لا تظهر بعض القطاعات أي علاقة ذات دلالة، بينما تظهر قطاعات أخرى تأثيرات إيجابية أو سلبية. ومن بين هذه القطاعات، يُعد قطاع تصنيع المشروبات الأكثر تأثرًا بالسلب بتقلبات سعر الصرف، في حين يظهر قطاع تصنيع المنسوجات أقوى علاقة إيجابية. |
