| Summary, etc. | Background: Sickle cell anemia is an increasing global health genetic problem characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia and tissue damage due to repeated microvascular obstruction by sickle shaped cells. Children with sickle cell anemia miss out on the favorable health effects of regular physical activity, such as the growth of lean body mass, strength and fitness.<br/>Objective: To assess muscle strength and health related quality of life in children with sickle cell anemia and to determine the relation between muscle strength and quality of life in children with sickle cell anemia.<br/>Method: Thirty children diagnosed with sickle cell anemia (Genetic test; detection of presence of the abnormal gene that causes SCA1) aged from 6-10 years (study group) and thirty age matched healthy normal children from both sexes were enrolled in the study (control group). Muscle strength was assessed by using handheld dynamometer and Lafayette handheld dynamometer for both groups. Quality of life was assessed by using the pediatric quality of life inventory TM (PedsQLTM) 3.0 generic core scale for sickle cell anemia group.<br/>Results: There were significant reductions in muscle strength and all domains of health-related quality of life of children with SCA compared with normal age beer children (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between muscle strength and quality of life dimensions (pain impact, emotional, worry1 and communication II).<br/>Conclusion: Sickle cell anemia has a negative impact on muscle strength and health related quality of life. |

| Summary, etc. | الخلفية: فقر الدم المنجلي هو مشكلة وراثية صحية عالمية متزايدة تتميز بفقر الدم الانحلالي المزمن وتلف الأنسجة بسبب انسداد الأوعية الدموية الدقيقة المتكرر بواسطة الخلايا المنجلية. يمكن أن يؤدي التقييم لمدا خطورة فقر الدم المنجلي وتأثيره على كل من قوة العضلات و جودة الحياة إلى علاج وإدارة أكثر دقة.<br/>الهدف: تقييم قوة قبضة اليد و جودة الحياة المرتبطة بالصحة لدى الأطفال المصابين بفقر الدم المنجلي.<br/>الطريقة: تم تسجيل ثلاثين طفلاً تم تشخيصهم بفقر الدم المنجلي تتراوح أعمارهم بين 6-10 سنوات (مجموعة الدراسة) وثلاثين طفلاً سليماً متطابقين في العمر من كلا الجنسين في الدراسة (مجموعة التحكم). تم تقييم قوة العضلات باستخدام الديناميومتر اليدوي والديناميومتر اليدوي للافاييت لكلتا المجموعتين. تم تقييم جودة الحياة باستخدام مقياس جودة الحياة للأطفال TM (PedsQLTM) النسخة 3.0 الأساسية العامة لمجموعة فقر الدم المنجلي.<br/>النتائج: هناك انخفاضات كبيرة في القوة العضلية وجميع مقاييس جودة الحياة (الأداء البدني والعاطفي والاجتماعي والمدرسي) لمجموعة الدراسة بالمقارنة مع المجموعة الضابطة و كان هناك ارتباط إيجابي بين قوة العضلات وأبعاد جودة الحياة (أثر الألم، العواطف، القلق، والتواصل).<br/> (P<0.05)<br/>الاستنتاج: فقر الدم المنجلي له تأثير سلبي على قوة العضلات و جودة الحياة. |
