| Summary, etc. | Background: Vaccine hesitancy remains a global public health challenge, particularly among migrants who face unique barriers to immunization. This study explores the factors influencing vaccine hesitancy among migrants in Cairo, Egypt, using the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) tool and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with stakeholders.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 179 migrant parents using the PACV survey to assess vaccine hesitancy. Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were conducted with stakeholders, to explore contextual barriers and enablers. Quantitative data from the PACV survey were analyzed to determine hesitancy scores and their association with demographic factors, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data from KIIs.
Results: The mean PACV hesitancy score was 19.16 (SD = 4.85), indicating moderate vaccine hesitancy among the study population. While 95.9% of parents expressed willingness to vaccinate their children, 63.9% reported concerns about vaccine side effects, and 62.8% preferred fewer vaccines at the same time. Hesitancy was highest among parents aged 30–39 years and those with higher educational attainment. Key barriers identified included transportation challenges, lack of awareness about vaccination schedules and catch-up programs, and distrust in street-based vaccination campaigns. However, trust in healthcare providers (93.6%) and community-based organizations (CBOs) emerged as enablers of vaccine acceptance.
Conclusion: Despite overall vaccine acceptance, significant logistical, informational, and trust-related barriers contribute to hesitancy among migrant parents in Cairo. Addressing these barriers through tailored, culturally sensitive strategies can improve vaccine uptake and protect migrant children from vaccine-preventable diseases. |
| 520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc.
