520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally and the
main cause of disability, postural instability, and risk of falling. Russian current
is commonly used to enhance rehabilitation of stroke patients. Purpose: This
study aimed to examine the effect of Russian current stimulation for anterior
tibial muscle group on postural stability and fall risk in chronic stroke patients.
Method: Forty chronic stroke patients of both genders, complaining from
weakness of anterior tibial muscle group were enrolled in the study. They aged
between 40 to 55 years and their Body Mass Index (BMI) ≤ 30 kg/m2. Patients
were assigned and allocated randomly into study, as well as control groups.
Control group received only a selected physiotherapy program including range
of motion, strengthening, stretching, and functional mobility exercises, for 40
minutes. Study group received 20 minutes Russian current stimulation in
addition to 20 minutes selected physical therapy program. All patients were
assessed before, and after treatment using Berg balance scale and Biodex-
balance system in order to assess static postural stability, overall stability index
and risk of fall index. Result: There was post treatment significant increase in
mean scores of berg balance scale, and significant decrease in mean overall
stability index, anterio-posterior, and medio-lateral stability, sway index, as
well risk of falling during eye opening, in favor of the study group (p < 0.05).
No significant difference was observed between both groups post treatment in
risk of fall during eye closure (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Using of Russian
Current on anterior tibial muscle group combined with exercise significantly
enhances postural stability and reduces fall risk in patients with chronic stroke
compared to exercise therapy alone.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
