520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive demyelinating disease that has been linked to different polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between vitamin D levels and VDR gene polymorphisms Bsm1 and Fok1 with the risk of MS in Egyptian females.
Method: A cross-sectional, case-control analytical study enrolled 50 female patients with definite MS Fifty and matched healthy volunteers, as the control group. Pregnant females, patients with other neurological or autoimmune disease were excluded. Serum vitamin D was measured by ELISA. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and VDRG polymorphisms that were studied in the study population.
Result: Vitamin D levels showed a statistically significant difference between the cases. The b allele was the most frequent allele for the Bsm1 (74% among the cases and 76% among the controls). The b/b genotype was also the most observed in both groups counting as 58% among the cases and 60% among the controls. For the Fok1, The F allele was the most frequent (64% among the cases and 69% among the controls). The F/F heterozygote genotype was the most observed in both cases and controls, counting as 44% and 50% respectively. Association between the Bsm1 and Fok1 SNPs and MS were examined under dominant, recessive, and co-dominant genetic models. There were non-statistically significant associations between any of the SNPs and MS under the three tested models.
Conclusion: This study concluded that the Bsm1 and Fok1 polymorphisms of the VDR gene are not associated with MS risk in female Egyptian patients.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
