520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Background: Cervical Radiculopathy is a pathological condition of the cervical nerve
root, causing sensory and motor deficits. The greater demand for neurological physical
therapy identifies the need for more evidence–based techniques
Purpose: To compare the effect of sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAGs) and
neurodynamic mobilization (NM) on pain intensity, cervical range of motion and
functional ability in patients with chronic unilateral discogenic cervical radiculopathy.
Methodology: forty two patients complaining from cervical radiculopathy with age
from 30 to 45years were randomly assigned to three equal groups. Study group (G1)
received sustained natural apophyseal glides in addition to a selected physical therapy
program (Hot pack, stretching and strengthening exercises for cervical muscles). Study
group (G2) received neurodynamic mobilization for median and radial nerves in
addition to the same selected physical therapy program and control group (G3) received
the selected physical therapy program only. Treatment was conducted for 45 minutes,
three sessions per week for four weeks. Measurement of pain intensity was done using
Visual analogue scale (VAS), whereas cervical range of motion (ROM) was measured
by cervical range of motion (CROM) device, functional disability was assessed by the
Arabic version of neck disability index (NDI). Measurements were performed for all
patients in three groups before and after four weeks of treatment program. Results:
There is no significant difference between the three studied groups post treatment in
pain intensity. There were significant differences in cervical ROM and NDI score
between the three studied groups post treatment. The reduction of NDI score was better
among study group (G1) and study group (G2) compared to control group (G3). Study
group (G1) showed significant improvement in cervical range of motion post treatment
more than study group (G2) and control group (G3). Conclusion: Both Mulligan
SNAGs technique as well as neurodynamic mobilization have a positive effect on pain
intensity, cervical range of motion and neck functional ability with more superiority to
Mulligan SNAGs technique. Both techniques are effective in the rehabilitation of
patients with cervical radiculopathy.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
