| Summary, etc. | The global power system faces challenges in frequency regulation due to the growing <br/>integration of variable-speed wind turbines (WTs) with power electronics for maximum power <br/>point tracking. WTs lack inherent inertia support, making grids with high renewable penetration <br/>more sensitive to disturbances. Current frequency regulation methods use stored rotor energy or <br/>additional power reserves face limitations, including slow response, secondary frequency drops, <br/>and increased system costs. <br/>This thesis models the inertia of WTs, showing its dependency on Phase-Locked Loop <br/>bandwidth. Besides, it proposes a closed loop that examines the effect of PLL tuning upon the <br/>inertia controller. The step-wise inertia controller, combined with optimized PLL design, effect is <br/>studied on the frequency response and grid stability. Simulations are done to examine the effect <br/>of tuned controllers on the frequency response of DFIG and PMSG WT systems. Experimental <br/>validations confirm the role of PLL tuning on the frequency response of PMSG WT system. |
