Developing countries are known as emerging markets because they are
undergoing rapid economic growth and adopting policies that encourage
investment openness. Therefore, their economies are expected to grow faster
than the developed nations. So, recently most of the developing countries
have been increasing their utilization of development projects as vehicles to
achieve economic and social development. Unexpectedly, many development
projects in developing countries do not meet expectations of the stakeholders
in terms of time, cost, risk and quality.
This study aims to prove that there is a positive correlation between the
application of international practices of project management and success of
the development projects and the application of international project
management practices has a positive impact on success of the development
projects in Egypt.
To understand the main factors that might hinder achieving economic
projects goals in the Egyptian ministries and organizations and in order to
achieve the objectives of this study; an online survey was distributed on
multiple social media outlets. The study was limited to project management
professionals who are working for government organizations participating in
achieving strategic projects at any stage of the economic development
projects only.
The survey included some demographic data in section one while, in
section two tested some phrases related to the following knowledge areas of
BOK-PMI ; project integration management, project scope management,
project time management, project cost management , project quality
management, project risk management, project resources management ,
project communication management, project procurement management. The
third section included phrases related to the criteria for measuring
development project success as; Coherence, efficiency, effectiveness, impact
and sustainability.
Based upon the analysis of responses, the results of the study proved that
there is a statistically significant correlation between application of the
international practices for project management and success of the economic

development project. The study found that, the application of international
practices for the management of projects is able to increase the success of the
development project.
The study recommendation included: Developing accurate schedules,
realistic cost estimates, effective quality systems, and clearly defined project
scope, while ensuring integration of all project components and improving
both internal and external communication channels, providing consistent
planning, monitor and control procedures, and communicate results on a
regular basis for all development projects. Moreover, providing periodic
training to PMs and project teams to ensure their competency is necessary.
The study also recommended involving all the stakeholders from project
beginning; starting from the planning. Other recommendations of the study
stresses that working on changing the current culture of hiding information,
striving for transparency and encouraging information sharing, Fostering the
culture of risk taking and mitigation approaches within public sector
organizations. In addition to encouraging empowerment, collaboration and
team work |
