| Summary, etc. | This thesis presents the results of experimental models to study the effectiveness of (Expanded Polystyrene) EPS geofoam and sand layers in mitigating the harmful effects of swelling soils on retaining structures. The study process includes creating physical models that simulate a sheet pile wall behind swelling soil. The pressure exerted on the wall was measured using a cell pressure transducer, while lateral movement was measured using LVDTs along the wall section. The study shows that using EPS geofoam was an effective way to lower lateral pressure and wall movement. It reduced lateral pressure by 64.06%, 27.07%, and 16.42% for thicknesses of 5 cm, 3 cm, and 2 cm, respectively. Additionally, using sand layers of the same thickness reduced lateral pressure by 4.14% and 1.85% for thicknesses of 5 cm and 3 cm, respectively. The study indicated that EPS geofoam decreased wall lateral movement at the maximum movement point by 59.96%, 34.93%, and 31.58% for thicknesses of 5 cm, 3 cm, and 2 cm, respectively. This technique performed better than sand layers, which reduced wall lateral movement by 24.79% and 7.50% for thicknesses of 5 cm and 3 cm, respectively. The results clearly illustrate that EPS geofoam offers more effective results than sand layers. |
