520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Identification of midgut bacteria of Culex pipiens complex revealed
the presence of six bacterial strains Atlantibacter hermanni, Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter
cloacae, Robertmurraya sp., Bacillus sp. and Morganella sp. The first three bacterial
species were used for several investigations, The genotoxic effect of the isolated bacteria
was estimated through the use of the alkaline comet assay and related to the impact on
mosquito longevity and reproductive potential that might be observed. A distinct increase
in cell DNA damage accompanied by an outstanding effect on life span and reproductive
fitness, was clear in the case of vectors under investigation. The expression level of some
antimicrobial genes decreased greatly in the case of the aseptic Cx. pipiens s.l. females than
their counterparts of the naïve ones, an up-regulation was observed after treatment with the
three selected midgut bacteria.
A successful experimental infection of Culex pipiens s.l. with Hepatozoon
maruhensis infecting Psammophis schokari snake was carried out under laboratory
conditions of 24±3ºC and 60-70 % R.H .The period monitored for a complete
sporogonic cycle was 17 days after infected blood meal of the sterilized females
facing 21 days in case of the naïve ones. The midgut bacteria have a highly
significant effect on the number and size of sporocysts of Hepatozoon inhabiting
the mosquito.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
