| Summary, etc. | Blastocystis is a protozoan parasite inhabiting the human intestinal tract. Although<br/>extensively studied over the years, the pathogenic significance of Blastocystis<br/>remains uncertain. Phylogenetic and genotypic analyses have revealed that<br/>Blastocystis is highly genetically diverse, with humans harboring several zoonotic<br/>strains. The present study was carried on 150 patients, 50 diagnosed with colorectal<br/>carcinoma (CRC group), as well as 100 patients not diagnosed to have colorectal<br/>carcinoma (Non- CRC) (Control group). <br/>Out of the 150 faecal samples, direct smear examination revealed 30 Blastocystis <br/>positive cases, where they meet the inclusion criteria of our study. <br/>Blastocystis positive cases by cultivation (n=30) were classified into 2 groups: <br/>Group I: (n= 15) Patients diagnosed with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) with <br/>Blastocystis infection (CRC group). <br/>Group II: (n=15) Patients infected with Blastocystis, but not diagnosed to have <br/>colorectal carcinoma (Non- CRC) (Control group). <br/>Thirty Blastocystis isolates were genotyped by STS -PCR which revealed the<br/>predominance of ST3 in both CRC and Non-CRC groups (40%), followed by ST1<br/>detected in both groups (26.6%). Moreover, analysis of the protein profile of all<br/>Blastocystis isolates was done using SDS-PAGE, revealing a total of 15 bands of<br/>both high and low molecular weight ranging between 20 and 245 kDa. Common<br/>bands with molecular weight of 30, 65 and 70 kDa were detected in all isolates<br/>from CRC and non-CRC (100%). They were the most common bands detected in<br/>both groups. |
