| Summary, etc. | Aim: To investigate the efficacy of an innovative tooth cleaning agent extra virgin <br/>coconut oil with peppermint essential oil by oil pulling and toothbrushing with oil <br/>on the actual chance to avoid new lesions, reducing salivary Streptococcus mutans <br/>levels, bacterial salivary Streptococcus mutans virulence and plaque buildup versus <br/>over-the-counter toothpaste in high caries risk patients. <br/>Methodology: In this study, 40 patients who were at a high risk of developing <br/>cavities were selected. The patients were randomly divided into two groups of (20) <br/>each. One group (C1) was given the Coco pull healthy blend of organic oil (oil <br/>pulling and toothbrushing with oil) as a teeth cleaning product. The other group <br/>(C2) was given fluoride toothpaste (Colgate Total, 1450 ppm) and Chlorohexidine <br/>mouthwash as a control. The Cariogram software was used to determine the caries <br/>risk profile of the patient, with all Cariogram parameters being evaluated and <br/>recorded. A salivary profile was established by measuring buffer capacity, salivary <br/>flow rate, and the bacterial salivary Streptococcus mutans levels. The virulence of <br/>Streptococcus mutans was also assessed by measurement of S. mutans <br/>acidogenicity. Salivary samples were collected at three distinct time points: <br/>baseline (T0), after one month (T1), and after three months (T2) of using the <br/>assigned teeth cleaning products. <br/>Results: Overall comparison of antimicrobial effectiveness across both groups <br/>revealed a significant outcome. In both groups, the green, red, and light blue <br/>sectors of the Cariogram showed a statistically significant difference at different <br/>time intervals. The Coco Pull healthy blend of organic oil (oil pulling and <br/>toothbrushing with oil) as a teeth-cleaning product showed higher results <br/>(p<0.001). Regarding the measurement S.mutans acidogenicity, the findings <br/>showed that both groups produced significantly less lactic acid and kept the broth‘s <br/>pH values above 4.0 for extended periods after treatment (p<0.001). No statistically <br/>significant difference was observed between the two groups. <br/> Conclusion: Extra virgin coconut oil with essential peppermint oil by oil pulling <br/>and toothbrushing with oil is efficient as a natural cleaning agent for oral hygiene <br/>routine on reducing salivary streptococcus mutant levels, tooth decay, plaque <br/>buildup and bacterial virulence in high caries risk patients with minimum hazards <br/>as a substitute to the present available synthetic preventive measures. |
