| Summary, etc. | This study examines the complex state-religion dynamics in Egypt and Tunisia, two <br/>countries with deep historical, cultural, and political connections. Despite shared <br/>backgrounds, their approaches to religious authority, especially in family law, differ <br/>significantly, while similarities exist in areas like mosque governance and religious <br/>discourse regulation. The research questions why these overlaps and divergences <br/>occur. Reviewing the literature, it highlights two prevailing paradigms: <br/>secularization theory, which underscores cultural and ideological divergence, and <br/>Talal Asad’s post-colonial framework, which stresses structural similarities as <br/>modern secular states. Moving beyond these lenses, the study adopts a Contextual <br/>Political Analysis to incorporate the roles of historical settlements, elite strategies, <br/>political rivalries, and shifting power configurations. The findings contend that the <br/>evolution of state-religion relations in both countries is not simply a byproduct of <br/>secularization or state modernization. Instead, these trajectories are shaped by <br/>ongoing political contestation and context-specific dynamics, especially during <br/>times of political transition. |
