| Summary, etc. | Background: The risk factors for EVD infection are still a major topic of controversy, hence the need for further research. External ventricular drain (EVD) has a major role in monitoring and managing intracranial pressure (ICP). Aim: To examine correlations of external ventricular drain infection among neuro-surgical critically ill patients. Research Question: What are the correlates of EVD infection among neuro-surgical critically ill patients at Cairo University Hospitals? Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized in the current study. Setting: This study was conducted at one of the intensive care units, at Manial University Hospital. Sample: A Purposeful sample consisting of 40 patients who underwent insertion of external ventricular drain (EVD) was recruited. Tools: Demographic and medical data form, Microbiologic data, plasma and CSF laboratory data. Predisposing factors to EVD infection assessment sheet were utilized in data collection. Results: The study findings revealed the dominance of males (60%), and 27.5% of them their age ranged between 51-60 years. EVDs placed in 87.5% of the sample studied for Temporary CSF Diversion indication, EVD duration was ranged between 315 days with mean 5.9, 87.5% of them did not change the EVD, and 100% use systemic antibiotics therapy. In addition, there is no significant relation between EVD infection and Patient Demographic data, but there is significant relation between EVD infection and EVD duration, comorbidities and CSF bloody appearance. Conclusion: The current study concluded that External ventricular drain-related infection (EVDRI) was associated with patient characteristics as well as EVD characteristics in critically ill patients who proceed with EVD and are hospitalized in intensive care units. Recommendation: Early EVD Removal and patients discharge should be goals whenever medically appropriate. |

| Summary, etc. | يعد تركيب الدرنقة المخية الخارجية من أكثر الإجراءات التي يتم إجراؤها في جراحة الأعصاب. تعتبر درنقة المخ الخارجية وسيلة موثوقة ودقيقة وفعالة من حيث التكلفة لمراقبة ضغط الدماغ الداخلي في حالات إصابات الدماغ الرضحية الحادة، ونزيف تحت العنكبوتية، والسكتات الدماغية النزيفية والإقفارية وتستخدم أيضا الدرنقة المخية الخارجية عند الحاجة إلى تحويل مؤقت للسائل النخاعي لعلاج الاستسقاء الدماغي الحاد الناتج عن نزيف داخل البطيني، والتهاب السحايا المعدي، والأورام التي تعيق تدفق السائل النخاعي مثل الكدمات داخل الدماغ والأورام في هذه الظروف.<br/>تعمل درنقة المخ الخارجية على مراقبة تقدم المرض واستجابة للعلاج حتى يتم حل المشكلة المعنية أو التعامل معها بشكل نهائي. ويمكن استخدامها أيضاُ كوسيله لإعطاء المضادات الحيوية في حالة التهاب البطنيات المخية، تشمل المضاعفات الناجمة عن درنقات المخ الخارجية النزيف، والانسداد، والأهم من ذلك العدوى، والتهاب السحايا، والخراج الدماغي، أو تجمع الصديد تحت الجافية، وإن العدوى قد تؤدي إلى إزالة وإعادة إدخال درنقة جديدة، وإقامة طويلة في المستشفى. |
