| Summary, etc. | Background: We aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of erector <br/>spinae plane (ESP) block in comparison to oblique subcostal transversus <br/>abdominis plane (TAP) block in patients undergoing emergency <br/>laparotomy. <br/>Design: Randomized controlled trial <br/>Setting: operating room <br/>Patients: Adults undergoing emergency laparotomy with midline <br/>incision. <br/>Intervention: Participants were randomized to receive either ESP or <br/>oblique subcostal TAP block before the surgery. <br/>Measurements: Postoperatively, static and dynamic numerical rating <br/>scale (NRS) were assessed at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, and 24 h. Primary <br/>outcome was 24 h analgesic consumption. Secondary outcomes included <br/>time to first postoperative analgesic request, NRS, time to independent <br/>movement, and patient satisfaction. <br/>Main results: Data from 70 patients were analyzed. The ESP block group <br/>had lower analgesic consumption and longer time to first analgesic <br/>request than the TAP block group. The overall 24 h postoperative static <br/>and dynamic NRS scores were lower in the ESP block group than the <br/>TAP block group by 1.42 and 1.55 points, respectively. The time to <br/>independent movement was comparable between the two groups. Patient <br/>satisfaction was higher in the ESP block group than in the TAP block <br/>group at 24 h postoperatively. <br/>Conclusion: In patients undergoing emergency laparotomy with midline <br/>incision, ESP block provided superior analgesic profile and higher patient <br/>satisfaction to TAP block |
