| Summary, etc. | Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus represents a prevalent chronic endocrine and metabolic disorder affecting a significant proportion of pediatric and adolescent populations, with a rising incidence of diagnoses annually. Diabetic myopathy is a prevalent clinical manifestation in type 1 diabetic persons. Purposes: This study was conducted to verify the influence of a specially designed occupational therapy program on hand grip, pinch grip, and manual dexterity in type 1 diabetic children. Methods: Sixty children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, including 31 girls and 29 boys ranging in age from 6 to 8 years, were involved in the study. They were divided at random into two groups equal in number control group (A) was treated by a traditional physical therapy program, while study group (B) was treated by the same traditional physical therapy program and a specially designed occupational therapy program. The treatment was applied 3 times per week over a 3-months period. Children in all groups were subjected to laboratory investigation of the standardized hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) % test. Hand grip was measured by a JAMAR hand-held dynamometer. Manual dexterity and pinch strength (tip, tripod, and key strength) were evaluated by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, second edition, and Baseline Mechanical Pinch Gauge, respectively, pre-and post-treatment. Results: After the treatment, the study group exhibited a significant enhancement in manual dexterity and both hand and pinch grip strength compared to their baseline levels (p < 0.05). Additionally, post- treatment, the manual dexterity, hand, and pinch grip strength in the study group showed a significant improvement when contrasted with the control group (p < 0.001). Furthermore, both groups demonstrated a significant reduction in HbA1C levels post-treatment relative to their pre-treatment measurements (p < 0.001). Also, control group showed no differences in hand functions (hand grip, pinch grip, manual dexterity) pre and post treatment. Conclusions: A designed occupational therapy program can improve hand functions in children suffering from type 1 diabetes. |
