| Summary, etc. | Background: Hearing difficulties (HD) in adults who have normal thresholds on pure tone <br/>audiometry (PTA) is a common condition with a prevalence of 5%-37% in patients <br/>complaining of hearing problems in an audiology clinic but also commonly ignored. There <br/>are many possible causes including hidden hearing loss (HHL) or cochlear synaptopathy, <br/>which is a perceptual disorder characterized by complaining of hearing difficulties despite <br/>falling within normal audiometric thresholds, especially in challenging listening conditions <br/>as noisy environments. <br/>Objectives: To investigate patients complaining of hearing difficulties despite normal <br/>audiogram thresholds using SPIN test, ABR and OAEs. To explore whether these tests <br/>could serve as diagnostic tools for hidden hearing loss. <br/>Methods: A case control study, each of the study and the control groups comprised 40 <br/>subjects; age and sex matched. Age ranged from 18 to 50 years. Hearing was assessed in <br/>both groups using PTA, SPIN test, ABR and OAEs. <br/>Results: SPIN test findings showed a statistically significant difference between the study <br/>and the control groups. Also, ABR showed a statistically significant differences regarding <br/>amplitude of wave I and V/I ratio between the study and the control groups in both ears. <br/>Both ears showed a statistically significant positive correlation between SPIN score and <br/>ABR wave I amplitude. <br/>Conclusion: Patients who complain of hearing difficulties with normal audiogram showed <br/>poorer SPIN test scores, a reduction in ABR wave I amplitude and elevation in V/I ratio in <br/>the current study. |
