| Summary, etc. | The motivations for code-switching have long piqued the curiosity of researchers. This study <br/>aimed to examine code-switching as a tool of identity enactment and positioning in the <br/>unscripted discourse of Egyptians in the Egyptian talk show, Heya w Bas. The theory of <br/>indexicality was employed to uncover the indexes of English, Standard Arabic, and Egyptian <br/>Colloquial Arabic (ECA) in the discourse of different speakers. Stance theory was used to <br/>identify the stances taken through the interlocutors’ choice of code in relation to self and other <br/>identity. Analysis was conducted using Du Bois’ Stance Triangle (2007) and Silverstein’s <br/>Indexical Orders (2003), supported by structural, discursive, metalinguistic, and paralinguistic <br/>resources. The analysis revealed that English had the positive indexes of education, modernity, <br/>high social class, professionalism, and the negative indexes of ambiguity, complexity, and fake <br/>sophistication. ECA was indexical of ease of communication, belonging, normality, solidarity, <br/>and informality. Standard Arabic was indexical of authority, scholarly discussion, education, <br/>religion, and the mixed indexes of formality and gravity. Both host and guests displayed degrees <br/>of awareness of the indexes of all three codes and used them to identify as sophisticated and <br/>educated professionals, with a few unsuccessful attempts that revealed a lack of linguistic <br/>competence. Attempts were made to provide translations to the English CS instances for the <br/>audience, but it was the host who asked for or provided translations more often. It was found that <br/>guests particularly prioritized enacting certain identities by using CS over being understood by <br/>either the host or audience. |
| 520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
