| Summary, etc. | The main two difficulties of using direct method in modeling soil-structure interaction <br/>(SSI) are to apply absorbing boundaries that prevent wave reflections, and to define <br/>compatible seismic input motion at the soil boundaries. In this research, the direct method <br/>was applied for 2D box culvert - soil system by overcoming the previous difficulties using <br/>(i) verified finite element absorbing boundaries embedded in Abaqus, (ii) applying <br/>seismic input using domain reduction method (DRM) in MATLAB. Three verifications <br/>were conducted in this research for the absorbing boundaries, seismic input forces using <br/>DRM, and for the model that include the RC structure. These verifications showed a good <br/>agreement. The parametric study includes studying the effect of changing structure <br/>thickness, and reinforcement bar diameter on the underground box culverts structures. <br/>The results were compared with the calculated forces and moments according to NCHRP <br/>611 and the simplified method. The NCHRP 611 produces closer results to the direct SSI <br/>numerical modeling in estimating the shear forces in walls and axial forces in walls and <br/>slabs, while the simplified method produces closer results in estimating the shear forces <br/>in slabs and the moments in walls and slabs, Therefore, caution should be taken when <br/>designing the underground RC box culverts using the NCHRP 611 and the simplified <br/>methods, in order to obtain the most safe and economic structure. |

| Summary, etc. | في هذا البحث، تم تطبيق الطريقة المباشرة لنمذجة التأثير المتبادل بين التربة والمنشأ على البرابخ الخرسانية في المستوى ثنائي الابعاد من خلال التغلب على الصعوبات السابقة باستخدام (1) عناصر حدودية لاتسمح بانعكاس الموجات، (2) تطبيق أحمال زلزالية على حدود التربة باستخدام طريقة تقليل النطاقوالمبرمجة باستخدام برنامج الحاسب الالي (MATLAB). تم إجراء ثلاثة عمليات نمذجة للتأكد من صحة نتائج الحدود التي لا تسمح بانعكاس الموجات، ولتطبيق الأحمال الزلزالية باستخدام طريقة تقليل النطاق، وللنموذج الذي يتضمن وجودالمنشأالخرساني. وقد أظهرت هذه النماذج توافقا جيدا. تضمن البحث دراسة تأثير تغيير سمك المنشأ وقطر اسياخ حديد التسليح على البرابخ الخرسانية تحت سطح الأرض وتمت مقارنة النتائج بالقوى والعزوم المحسوبة وفقا لمعيار NCHRP 611ووفقا للطريقة المبسطة. تقدم نتائج معيار NCHRP 611 نتائج اقرب الى قيم نتائج النمذجة بالطريقة المباشرة لقوى القص في الحوائط وللقوى المحورية في كلا من الحوائط والبلاطات، اما الطريقة المبسطة فتقدم نتائج اقرب لقوى القص في البلاطات وللعزوم في كلا من الحوائط والبلاطات. |
