| Summary, etc. | Materialism has been widely discussed in the economic literature and debated on having positive and negative effects. It may increase consumer desire but negatively affects wellbeing and cause social, psychological, political and environmental consequences. This study examines materialism in Egypt through two phases. The first analyzes national materialism using World Values Survey data for Egypt (2001–2018, N = 8,143) with an ordered logit model. The second applies a survey experiment with youth (N = 296) to test behavioral interventions designed to reduce personal materialism. Results show that education lowers materialism among youth (p<.01), while age increases it (p<.05). Being single or divorced also reduces materialism (p<.05). Experimental findings indicate that boosting self-confidence (p<.05), fostering gratitude (p<.01), and encouraging pro-social behavior (p<.01) significantly reduce materialistic orientations. Methodologically, the study integrates large-scale survey analysis with randomized interventions, ensuring robust insights at both national and personal levels. Based on the evidence, the study recommends promoting civic engagement, gratitude, and self-confidence as policy tools to mitigate materialism among Egyptian youth. |

| Summary, etc. | لقد نوقش المذهب المادي على نطاق واسع في الأدبيات الاقتصادية، وتباينت الآراء حول آثاره الإيجابية والسلبية. فقد يؤدي إلى زيادة الرغبة الاستهلاكية، لكنه يؤثر سلبًا على الرفاهية ويترتب عليه عواقب اجتماعية ونفسية وسياسية وبيئية. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل المادية في مصر من خلال مرحلتين. تتناول المرحلة الأولى تحليل المادية على المستوى الوطني باستخدام بيانات مسح القيم العالمية في مصر (عدد المشاركين = 8,143) من خلال نموذج لوﭼيت الترتيبي. أما المرحلة الثانية، فتُجرى من خلال تجربة مسحية تستهدف الشباب (عدد المشاركين = 296) لاختبار تدخلات سلوكية مصممة لتقليل النزعة المادية الشخصية. وتُظهر النتائج أن التعليم يُخفّض من مستوى المادية لدى الشباب (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.01)، في حين أن التقدم في العمر يزيد منها (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.05). كما أن كون الفرد أعزبًا أو مطلقًا يسهم أيضًا في تقليل المادية (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.05). وتُشير النتائج التجريبية إلى أن تعزيز الثقة بالنفس (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.05)، وتنمية مشاعر الامتنان (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.01)، وتشجيع السلوك الاجتماعي الإيجابي (قيمة الاحتمال < 0.01) تؤدي جميعها إلى تقليل النزعات المادية بشكل ملحوظ. ومن الناحية المنهجية، تدمج الدراسة بين تحليل بيانات مسحية واسعة النطاق وتدخلات عشوائية، ما يضمن استخلاص رؤى قوية على المستويين الوطني والفردي. وبناءً على الأدلة، توصي الدراسة بتعزيز المشاركة المجتمعية، ومشاعر الامتنان، والثقة بالنفس كأدوات سياساتية للحد من النزعة المادية بين الشباب المصري. |
