Summary, etc. This study assesses the natural radioactivity levels and associated radiological hazards of twenty-eight black sand (BS) deposit samples collected along the Mediterranean Sea coast of North Sinai, Egypt. The samples were obtained from six locations: El Ressa, Abo Sakl, Ghornata, El Arish, El Masaed, and El Romana. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K were measured using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector with a relative efficiency of 100%. Standard methodologies were followed for sample selection, preparation, energy and efficiency calibration, minimum detectable activity (MDA) determination, and detector performance evaluation. Ambient dose rates at the sampling sites were monitored using two well-calibrated devices.
The activity concentrations of Radium (226Ra), Thorium (232Th), and Potassium (40K) in the BS samples were found to vary across the sampling locations. For El Ressa, the activity concentrations ranged from 17.08 ± 0.26 to 29.41 ± 0.34 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 4.80 ± 0.26 to
15.71 ± 0.55 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 21.23 ± 2.26 to 79.48 ± 1.86 Bq/kg for 40K. In Abo Sakl, the ranges were 14.03 ± 0.26 to 28.99 ± 0.45 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 4.39 ± 0.30 to 15.14 ± 0.44 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 104.75 ± 1.87 to 126.35 ± 2.16 Bq/kg for 40K. Samples from Ghornata showed activity concentrations of 14.28 ± 0.30 to 25.09 ± 0.34 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 5.25 ± 0.34 to 11.67 ± 0.39 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 87.63 ± 1.83 to 109.13 ± 2.13 Bq/kg for 40K. For El Arish, the ranges were 14.65 ± 0.25 to 18.15 ± 0.32 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 4.83 ± 0.28 to 7.23 ±
0.49 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 66.19 ± 2.01 to 110.28 ± 1.91 Bq/kg for 40K. In El Masaed, the activity concentrations were 13.22 ± 0.32 to 17.72 ± 0.31 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 3.90 ± 0.25 to 6.67
± 0.68 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 66.02 ± 1.20 to 108.90 ± 2.17 Bq/kg for 40K. Finally, El Romana samples exhibited activity concentrations of 13.73 ± 0.31 to 14.44 ± 0.26 Bq/kg for 226Ra,
3.82 ± 0.40 to 6.18 ± 0.53 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 267.09 ± 3.07 to 294.25 ± 4.09 Bq/kg for 40K.

El Ressa samples exhibited the highest average activity concentrations for 226Ra and 232Th, while El Romana samples showed the highest levels of 40K. Radiological hazard indices, including the absorbed gamma dose rate (𝐷), annual effective dose (𝐸), radium equivalent activity (𝑅𝑎𝑒𝑞), and external (𝐻𝑒𝑥) and internal (𝐻𝑖𝑛) hazard indices, were calculated. All values were found to be significantly lower than the world average values and

maximum permissible limits recommended by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Additionally, ambient dose rates across the six studied areas ranged from 0.06 to 0.10 µSv/h, well below international safety thresholds.
The results indicate that the black sand deposits along the North Sinai coast pose minimal radiological risks to public health and the environment under current conditions. This study highlights the effectiveness of HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry for precise and reliable radionuclide activity measurements and underscores the importance of continuous monitoring to ensure environmental and public safety.
