| Summary, etc. | Background: Obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. Metabolic syndrome is a term for a group of conditions, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol levels, that when combined increase an individual's risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Endothelial dysfunction is a well established response to cardiovascular risk factors and precedes the development of atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress (OS) is involved in pathological processes such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and atherogenic processes. Objectives: Assessment of 8-oxodG (oxidative stress biomarker) in obesity and metabolic syndrome and study its relationship to atherosclerosis in obese patients with and without metabolic syndrome. Methods: 52 obese with and without metabolic syndrome will be assessed to levels of 8-oxodG, CIMT and ABI and the results will be compared to 31 healthy controls |
