| Summary, etc. | Background: The role of vitamin D for skeletal development and maintenance of normal serum calcium levels is well established. In its severest form, vitamin D deficiency in childhood results in rickets while in adults results in osteomalacia. Purpose: The purpose of this prospective study is to evaluate serum levels of vitamin D in patients presenting in orthopaedic and non-orthopedic outpatient clinic and if there is any difference between them.Patients &methods:This study included 2 groups of patients; each group consisted of 25 children between 2 to 6 years of age.The first group included patients from orthopedic outpatient clinic.The second group included patients from ENT & Ophthalmology outpatient clinics. The patients were collected over the period from January 2018 to June 2018 at Abo Elreesh hospital and 25-hydroxyvitamin D {25(OH)D} level was measured for all cases. Results:Mean 25 (OH) D was 26.26ng/ml in orthopaedic patients and 24.91ng/ml in non orthopedic patients.4% of orthopaedic patients and 0% of non orthopedic patients of population had serum 25 (OH) D < 10ng/ml (severe deficiency 24% of orthopaedic patients and 36% of non orthopedic patients had serum 25 (OH) D <20ng/ml (deficiency)48% of orthopaedic patients and 44% of non orthopedic patients had serum 25 (OH) D between 20{u2013}29ng/ml (insufficiency)24% of orthopaedic patients and 20% of non orthopedic patients had serum 25 (OH) D >30ng/ml (optimum)60% of orthopaedic patients and 52% of non orthopedic patients were exposed daily to the sun. Conclusion: There were no statistically significant diffrences in vitamin D level in both groups . Most of cases in both groups had vitamin D insufficiency |
