تتناول هذه الدراسة بالنقد والتحليل موضوع "محمود كعت والتدوين التاريخي في السودان الغربي"، من خلال كتابه الموسوم بـ " تاريخ الفتاش في أخبار البلدان والجيوش وأكابر الناس وذكر وقائع التكرور وعظائم الأمور وتفريق أنساب العبيد من الأحرار"، فهذا المصدر المهم يحتل قيمة تاريخية وأهمية بالغة لدى كل المهمتين بتاريخ ممالك بلاد السودان الغربي خلال العصر الإسلامي، فمحمود كعت كان معاصرًا لكثير من الأحداث التي دونها، كما إنه يسرد تاريخ الملوك والممالك الإسلامية السودانية التي نشأت وتطورت وازدهرت عبر فترة زمنية طويلة تمتد من القرن الأول حتى نهاية القرن العاشر للهجرة.
وسوف نتناول هذا الموضوع من خلال تمهيد وخمسة فصول على النحو التالي: التمهيد (محمود كعت النشأة والتكوين العلمي)، والفصل الأول بعنوان (كتاب تاريخ الفتاش المنهج والمورد)، أما الفصل الثاني فعنوانه (محمود كعت والتدوين التاريخي للحياة الدينية في ممالك السودان الغربي)، في حين يأتي الفصل الثالث بعنوان (محمود كعت والتدوين التاريخي للحياة السياسية في ممالك السودان الغربي)، وخصصنا الفصل الرابع للحديث عن (محمود كعت والتدوين التاريخي للحياة الاقتصادية في مملكة صُنغي)، أما الفصل الخامس والأخير فهو بعنوان (محمود كعت والتدوين التاريخي للحياة الاجتماعية والثقافية في مملكة صُنغي).

This study deals with criticism and analysis of the subject of “Mahmoud Kaat and historical recording in Western Sudan,” through his book entitled “Tarikh Al-Fattash Fi Akhbar Al-Buldan Wa-Algiosh Wa-Akabir Al-nas Wa-Zikr Wakaea Al-Takrur Wa-Azaem Al-Umur Wa-Tafrik Ansab Al-Abid Min Al-Ahrar.” This important source occupies historical value and great importance. Both missions include the history of the kingdoms of Western Sudan during the Islamic era. Mahmoud Kaat was contemporary with many of the events he recorded. He also recounts the history of the Sudanese Islamic kings and kingdoms that arose, developed, and flourished over a long period of time extending from the first century until the end of the tenth century AH.
We will address this topic through an introduction and five chapters as follows: The introduction (Mahmoud Kaat: Origins and Scientific Formation), and the first chapter is entitled (The Book of the History of the Fattash, Methodology and Resource), while the second chapter is entitled (Mahmoud Kaat and the Historical Recording of Religious Life in the Kingdoms of Western Sudan). While the third chapter is entitled (Mahmoud Kaat and the historical recording of political life in the kingdoms of Western Sudan), we devoted the fourth chapter to talking about (Mahmoud Kaat and the historical recording of economic life in the Kingdom of Songhay), while the fifth and final chapter is entitled (Mahmoud Kaat and the historical recording of social and cultural life in the Kingdom of Songhay).
