Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D)-Cairo University, 2024. Summary: Background: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of acupuncture on primary hypothyroidism and irregular menstruation in infertile women. Methods: Sixty infertile women diagnosed with hypothyroidism, oligomenorrhea, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) participated in this study. Their age ranged from 20 to 35 years, and their body mass index (BMI) was 30 to 34.9 kg/m². They were randomly distributed into two groups equal in number. A control group received thyroxine tablets once daily with low caloric diet (1200 kcal/day) for 4 months. The study group received the same treatment as control group in addition to two acupuncture sessions per week for 4 months. Evaluation: was done for BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-stature ratio (WSR), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), LH/FSH ratio, length of menstrual cycles and PCOS questionnaire (PCOSQ) were evaluated for all patients before starting treatment and after the end of treatment course. Results: Both control and study groups showed a significant decrease (P<0.05) in BMI, waist circumference, WSR, TSH, LH, LH/FSH ratio, and length of menstrual cycles, while there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in FT4, PCOSQ scores and FSH of study group only. When comparing both groups post- intervention, the study group showed a significant decrease (P<0.05) in waist circumference, WSR, TSH, LH, LH/FSH ratio, as well as length of menstrual cycles, and a significant increase (P<0.05) in FSH, and PCOSQ scores. Conclusion: Adding acupuncture to both low caloric diet and medical treatment has an effective role in decreasing abdominal adiposity and improving hormonal profile, as well as menstrual cycles, which in turn improves the reproductive health of infertile women with hypothyroidism.
